Dragon Riders: Episode 1

FOREWORD

This story comes before Shane's Cave Story 1 and was written because of a dream I had. So far, this story has made the number of loose ends skyrocket  ;D

This "book" (story, although it's written in a book as well from which I'm typing all of this) is, like I said, based on a dream I had. So any weirdness in this story - such as Heartless appearing, or a weird language (Draconian) or even fully detailed things like school uniforms and such - is the dream's fault, not mine. Or it could be the other writers' faults, depending on who wrote the chapters. :P

Regardless, this story means that I have a lot of things to change in Shane's Cave Story 1, especially the main character, Shane, because of his fears. I have done my best to make sure that the prequel and the sequel to said prequel makes sense, but it's very hard, apparently. Where do Nobodies come from, for example? How do they exist?

Expect several shout outs and references to things like Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl, Kingdom Hearts and, of course, Cave Story. No, TV Tropes has NOT ruined my life. Instead, it gave me ideas for stuff like things that happen after the 20th chapter.

Note that this story doesn't begin with Shane - instead, another protagonist will have this honour. What is his name? Why does he exist? What is he?

Due to violence and overly-detailed stuff and (possibly) language*, this story is rated TEEN. I guess it counts as 16+, but who knows? Anything's possible.

If you have a suggestion for the story, the Comment thread is useful for such a thing. Note, however, that I write slower than I type, so it might take me several weeks to post all the finished chapters. :P

Admin / Cave Story Modder / Electrical Ice Teenager

P.S.: I wrote the Prologue after I finished Chapters 1 to 24. Said chapters are renumbered, however, due to several other forum members writing chapters.
P.S.2: Things like a school between Franskraal and Pearly Beach do not exist, as far as I know. Besides, most locations in this story are fictional.
P.S.3: If you want something to be explained, or you want a description about something (or even give one!), feel free to use the Comments thread! I may add the description to the story if this happens, and if it does, I will credit you.
P.S.4: The Draconian language is here. We've yet to post the words, though.
P.S.5: As of 1 April, this is now also known as Dragon Riders Episode 1.
P.S.6: You can read the full story here. That is where it will be updated first, in fact.

PROLOGUE

"Maddie Lawson-Johnson?"
A young brunette woman stood up. "Yes, your Honour?"
"Everything goes to you. Your sister would also like you to take care of their son."
"What?" Maddie said in shock. "But I can barely take care of my daughter, Emily!"
"Do not worry," the judge said. "Henry Black has offered to help you out financially."
"The Henry Black?!" Madie suddenly exclaimed. Her eyes turned into hearts. Literally.
"MADDIE!" the judge bellowed.
"Sorry," a blushing Maddie said, her eyes now normal again.
"Be grateful that this courtroom is full of magic-using people," the judge said angrily. "And yes, the star of those silly fantasy movies."
"Your Honour," a young man said, "it's to help Frogwings on their Creatures classes. It helps to know what non-magicians think about mythecal creatures like vampires or lycanthropes!"
"True," the judge replied. "Maddie?"
"Fine, I'll take care of the boy," Maddie said.
"Good," the judge said. "I assume you'll not enroll your daughter in a magic school?"
"Only if I have no other choice," Maddie answered. "Being fully human, it's best to be safe than sorry, right?"
"Of course," the judge said, "as most of the magic users believe that eating humans will grant them immortality. So, what job would you like? I can help, you know."
"I'd like to be an English teacher, if that's possible."
"Ah, yes, your English is most impressive, at your young age. Only what, 19 when you had your daughter?"
"Yes, your Honour."
"Very well, you shall be an English teacher at the school between Franskraal and Pearly Beach. I am the headmaster there, so it's fine."
"Really?" Maddie asked. The judge nods in response. "Thank you, your Honour."
"Court adjourned."

*****

After three months had gone by, Maddie and Henry became engaged. This was going to be Maddie's second husband - her first husband had died because of heart complications. Maddie was already planning on her wedding dress, and wasn't going to waste time making it as beautiful as possible. It was going to take place on 5 September that year, on Emily's birthday. However, there was one problem: Emily's cousin.
"Who would take care of Shaun?" Maddie asked Henry.
"I'll call a maid," he replied. "And Emily?"
"She'll be a bridesmaid. At her fifth birthday."
"Wow, she'll be happy as well, right?"
"Yeah... Losing her biological father like that was hard, but she's too young to know..."
"When will you tell her?" Henry asked.
"As soon as she is eight years old, at least," Maddie answered. "Anyway, let's get ready for the wedding, okay?"
"Okay."

The following day, the wedding ceremony began and was peaceful, until...
"Do you, Maddie Lawson..." the priestess began, but was interrupted.
"MADDIE!" The door crashed open and a police officer ran in. "Shaun's been kidnapped!"
"Darn it!" Maddie exclaimed. "Who? How?"
"The maid did it," the cop answered. "She was with that 'gas mask maid' gang all this time!"
"No, not my sister," Henry muttered. "I can't believe my sister did that!"
"Excuse me, but we've got to do something, dammit! Shaun's my nephew!" Maddie exclaimed.
"I understand," the priestess said, then she added with a wink, "I'll take care of Emily."
"Thanks, Chantelle!" Maddie said, then she, Henry and the police officer rushed out of the church.
"Emily?"
"Yes, aunt Chantelle?" Emily asked as she brushed dust off her clothes.
"Could you come with me?"
"Okay!" She followed her aunt into a room.
Chantelle smiled as she locked the door. "How long can you hold your breath?"
"One minute," Emily replied, as Chantelle put on a gas mask. "Are you going to hurt me?"
"No," Chantelle replied, slipping out of her shoes. She handed Emily a gas mask. "Put that on, remove your shoes, wait at the door."
"Okay," Emily said, confused about what was happening now. She did so as fast as she could, before she asked, "Are we going to kill people with poisonous gas? Such as chlorine or phosgene or some organophosphate nerve agent?"
"You know some big words," Chantelle said in shock. "Anyway, no, we're going to be distracting people first before killing them. You also need a coat, Emily."
Emily picked up a coat from the coat-hanger against the door, and put it on. "It's a bit large..."
"What do you expect? You're five years old, that coat's for thirty-plus people," Chantelle said. "Anyway, I want you to act like a cold-blooded murderess. D'you think you can do that?"
"Can I kill my parents with nerve gas and then stab them with poisoned daggers?" Emily asked.
"No!" Chantelle exclaimed angrily.
"I was just answering your question, aunt Chantelle. I can pretend to be evil and murderous."
"Oh, good," Chantelle replied, sighing with relief. "Press that button against the wall," she said, pulling on a pair of black gloves.
"Okay," Emily said. She pressed it, and the room began to sink into the ground. Eventually it began to fill with a green gas. "What's going on?"
"I'll tell you about it later," Chantelle answered. "Right now, your cousin's life is at stake. And the gas is toxic to the touch. When I say 'gas chamber' then you should immediately hold your breath, okay?"
"Okay," Emily said slowly. "But why not something else?"
"That's what came to mind when I set the trap, because that's basically what the entire place is, sheesh. Now, hush, Emily. We're almost there."
Three minutes of silence passed before the floor stopped shaking. The door opened, and the two entered a room where fifteen girls were waiting, all of them wearing maid outfits and gas masks. "You're late," one of them said. "And who is that kid?"
"Sorry we're late," Chantelle said. "I heard Shaun Engiabo's been--"
"Yeah, he's been kidnapped," the maid said. "WHO IS THAT KID?"
"I've got his five-year old cousin here," Chantelle continued. "She hates Shaun."
"Will you allow me to kill him painfully with poisonous gases?" Emily asked politely.
"Maybe," another girl replied. "You look ten years old, though. Not five years old, you should be shorter then."
"I grow quickly," Emily replied. "The moment he starts dying, I'll probably mock him in his last moments and tell him that he's worthless and stupid and boring and annoying and-" she swore - "idiotic!"
"Girl's got a harsh tongue," a third girl said. "Don't know any five year old children who actually use swear words."
"How about we... lock the two up in a gas chamber?" Chantelle asked as she began to hold her breath. Emily quickly held it as well, as the fifteen maids began coughing and quickly collapse to the ground. After fourty-five seconds had gone by, Chantelle sighed. "Quick, and painless."
"What happened?"
"See, I was working as a spy to stop the gas mask maid gang - there's still three more of them left, so it'll be easy to get them arrested instead. As for the poisonous gas, it's there to prevent spies from infiltrating their secret headquarters. They didn't count on spies wearing gas masks, though. As for how they died, well, let's just say it's easy to hide syringes in chairs that contain deadly poisons." Chantelle sighed. "Let's hope your mother and your stepfather found Shaun."
"I hope so too," Emily replied. "It is his fault that I'm in this mess, after all."
"Actually, no," Chantelle said. "There's another ally here, she is the one who kidnapped Shaun. I asked her to, so that the gas mask maid gang can be brought down."
"I see," Emily said, surprised.

"JAINA!" Henry shouted.
The gas mask-wearing maid holding an unconscious (and short) Shaun stopped suddenly. "B-brother!?"
Henry and Maddie stopped running as Jaina turned around. "Give me back my sister's son," Maddie said angrily. Then a door behind Jaina opened and two more girls wearing gas masks came out, although they lacked the maid outfits.
"I-- mother!"
"Huh?" Maddie looked confused as the youngest girl ran to her and hugged her.
"Mother, it's you!"
"Who are you?" Henry asked. The girl removed her gas mask.
"Emily?!" Maddie exclaimed in shock.
"Wait, what's going on here?" Jaina asked in shock, putting Shaun on the ground.
"Fifteen of the gas mask maids are dead," the other girl replied, removing her gas mask as well, "and now, there's only three left."
"Chantelle!" Jaina exclaimed.
"What's going on here?" Henry asked.
"Jaina and I were working undercover to stop the gas mask maids," Chantelle replied. "Emily helped us as well, by pretending that she hated Shaun. By the way, does she watch anything on television that contains language?"
"Not that we know of," Maddie and Henry both said. Emily blushed.
"Oops... I'm in trouble now, aren't I?" she asked.
"Definitely, young lady," Maddie asked.
"Anyway, call the cops," Jaina said. "Have them know that the gas mask maids will be at this location after the wedding. Speaking of which, you two should go back to church and finish it before something like this happens again."
"Ha ha, very funny," Henry said.

*****

"So, my parents dies in a terrorist attack?" Shaun asked. Five years had gone by since that day when Maddie and Henry had gotten married.
"Yes," Maddie answered. It pained her to lie to her nephew, but she had to. She didn't want her daughter or her nephew to know about magic being real. "And now, Emily's stepfather was... murdered brutally..."
"Don't worry about it, mom," Emily said. She was also ten years old now, like Shaun.
"Why are you keeping the last name?" Shaun asked.
"Because it'll be a hassle to change it back to Lawson, especially with the IDs," Maddie replied.
Emily smiled. "I can try to use the Internet to get a job-"
"No, Emily," Maddie said. "I have a job, after all. You two should go to bed, too, it's school tomorrow."
"Awww," Emily said, frowning. "Everybody's mean to Shaun and me."
"Look, I'll sort them out if you tell me what they do," Maddie said. "I can't do anything if you don't tell me what they do to you, you know."
"Yes, and night, aunt Maddie," Shaun replied as he left the room.
"Night, Shaun. Night, Emily," Maddie said.
"Night, mother." Emily hugged her mother tightly, before leaving the room.
Maddie took a photo of Henry that was on her cupboard, and started crying. "Why did that Irovan have to do this? Why?"

Morning came. Shaun was up before his aunt or cousin. "Morning."
"Morning, Shaun," Maddie said surprised. Shaun immediately figured out that she cried herself to sleep.
"Morning, cousin," Emily said. "Why're you up so early?"
"I wanted to make broke-- bread-- er..."
"Breakfast?" Emily asked.
"Yeah," Shaun answered. "But it ended up a flop." He looked at the bread. It was burnt beyond edibility.
"I'll do it," Maddie said. "After all, I'm better at making toast than you are, Shaun. And why do you keep blowing on your fingers?"
"Burnt them," Shaun said meekly.
"Ugh," Emily said, hitting her face with her palm. "You really are clumsy, aren't you?"
"Emily!" Maddie exclaimed angrily.
"It's true," Shaun said. "I am clumsy. Not even Mr. Twiddle is as clumsy as I am!"
"Uh, Shaun," Emily said, "Mr. Twiddle is not only very forgetful, but he's also a character from a book written by Enid Blyton."
"I know that," Shaun said.
After breakfast, Emily and Shaun were taken to school by Maddie. The two wore different school uniforms than the other students, but they were completely normal - except, of course, for their pasts. This is where Shaun Engiabo's story truly begins. Only time will tell where it will end.

CHAPTER 1
THE SECRET OF THE BLACKS

"That's gain!"
At a school nearby the house of the Blacks, a ten-year old boy defeated a girl of the same age in a card game. The victor was Shaun Engiabo. He defeated his cousin, who was known as Emily Black.
The energetic Shaun was rather tall for his age - you'd guess him to be a thirteen-year old, at least. His brown hair was swept by the wind, it looked as though he was a Super Saiyan from an anime called Dragon Ball Z. His brown eyes hid his calmness and his intelligence. On his left arm was a mark similar to the Japanese symbol for ice, as though it was a tattoo. It wasn't - it was a scar.
The smart Emily was not as normal as a ten-year old girl would be. She had blonde hair, dark blue eyes, and knew things only a 15-year old would learn at school. She also used the Internet to further her knowledge. Despite her intelligence being that high, however, she didn't want to go to the eighth grade until she was 15 - which would be when Shaun would be in the same grade. One could say that she has a rivalry with her cousin.
"Honestly, Shaun, can't you go easy on me?"
"Honestly, no," Shaun replied.
"And why not?" Emily asked.
"It's the one thing that stops me from being bullied by Mr. Crush over there," Shaun said, looking at a larger student.
"What?" Emily said, looking at her wristwatch. "Damn, bell rings in ten."
"I'm doomed," Shaun said, standing up.
"You forgot to do your homework?" Emily asked in shock.
"HEY, EN-GUY-BO!" the large student bellowed. "Oh, and that mass murderer Sirius' daughter too!"
"Hi, your highness," Shaun said bluntly.
"Eric?" Emily said softly.
Eric Johnson was a bully - Shaun called him "Mr. Crush" at times. He was sixteen years old, and bullied everybody, including teachers. If nobody did what he told them to do, then he'd beat them up. His father works for the police, and Shaun was braver than anyone else, to stand up to Eric.
"You beating duelists, En-guy-bo?" Eric asked.
"H-he just defeated me," Emily replied, shivering.
"Good," Eric bellowed. "You still will feel this, though." He pulled his fist back, and quickly punched forwards, but Shaun leapt backwards.
"Not this time!" Shaun shouted.
"Then I'll just harm Sirius Black's stupid little girl," he said in a threatening voice.
"Sectum-" Emily began, and Eric began cringing in fear.
"SOMEONE HELP ME!" he cried, holding his arms over his head. Emily ran to Shaun.
"You read too much Harry Potter," Emily said, then she muttered, "You're an idiotic jerk."
"WHY, YOU..."
Before anyone could react, Eric went for Shaun, but ended up hitting thin air. Shaun looked around. He was on top of a classroom's roof. "Oh, no," he muttered. "Not again."
Emily sighed. "Again? Another detention, for sure."
Shaun always carried a pen in his pocket. He took it out, pointed it at Eric, then shouted, "Obliviate!" Eric ran in terror. "Idiot thinks that everything in Harry Potter is real, but it isn't..." He leapt off the roof.
"SHAUN THOMAS BENJAMIN ENGIABO!"
Shaun turned around. His aunt, as well as the English Teacher, was standing there. He knew he was going to get a detention. "Yes, ma'am?" Shaun asked carefully, in fear of invoking his aunt's full wrath. When she shouted his full name, he knew he was in massive trouble.
"You are really brave, Shaun, but really! Climbing buildings like that? You should know better than to do that!" She took a deep breath. "Two detentions and a year's worth of punishment! No television, no computer, no video games, no board games, nothing!"
"Ma'am, Eric told him to beat students in card games, otherwise Shaun would be beat up," Emily said.
"Emily, one detention and you are punished for a month," Maddie said. "You didn't try to stop your cousin from climbing a roof."
"But I didn't! I was about to get punched in the face and possible through my skull, and the next thing I knew, I was on top of the roof with no idea how I got there!" Shaun said angrily.
"Five detentions, Shaun!" Maddie said angrily. "As I'm your guardian, it's impossible to talk to myself about your behavior, but I can give you detentions. And you'll get expelled if you get one more detention, you hear me?"
"Yes, aunt-- er, ma'am..." Shaun said meekly, as tears trickled down his cheeks. Nobody ever believed him whenever weird things happen. Nobody ever will.
"If magic really existed, then you'd probably be a wizard of some sort, and defeat a monster at the young age of 10," Emily said. Did she hear his thoughts? That's not possible...

*****

Precisely one week later, Shaun woke up at midnight to a loud knocking sound. He slipped out of bed, took his plastic sword in hand, and slowly (and silently) went to the front door, but then he noticed his aunt was there. She held a frying pan in her hand. He quickly hid behind a pillar. Aunt Maddie opened the door, hiding behind it.
"What are you, you fiend?" Shaun whispered to himself.
"That's weird," the figure said, "I guess I must have knocked it open and broken the lock."
He took a single step inside, and then his aunt struck. However, to both Shaun's and his aunt's amazement, the frying pan broke into pieces! Shaun then leapt forwad, holding his plastic sword against the neck of the intruder. "Who are you, fiend?" Shaun asked angrily and bravely.
"Fiend?" The person took a small stick and muttered, "Illuminaten." The stick lit up and aunt Maddie looked shocked.
"Prepare to fall, sorcerer!" Shaun shouted angrily.
"You're Shaun Thomas Benjamin Engiabo," a girl standing behind the man said, "aren't you? As if!"
"Uh, yeah," Shaun replied in shock. "How do you know my full name? And who sent you, Eric Johnson?"
"Her name is Kimberley Sarah Dawn Tyron, or Kimberley, for short," the man said as Kimberley stepped inside.
"Nice to meet you, I suppose," she said, bowing to Shaun as though he was a king. Shaun noticed her right arm was bandaged up to the elbow.
"Nice to meet you too, but can I-" Shaun was rudely interrupted.
"I am Abraham Bones. I have come to take you to Frogwings."
Shaun heard movement from the staircase, so he turned to look. Emily was coming downstairs, stifling a yawn. "What's going on?" she asked.
"They're kidnapping Shaun!" Maddie shouted suddenly. Emily threw a small rock that she carried with her at the man.
"Shieldex," he muttered, and the rock hit an invisible barrier around him. It flew off to the opposite direction.
Shaun sighed. Then he started to laugh hysterically. "What's so funny?" his aunt asked.
"HOW DO YOU KNOW MY FULL NAME!?" Shaun shouted angrily, startling everybody in the house.
"You didn't tell him? Abraham asked Maddie, who shook her head. "You're a wizard, Shaun."
"No, I'm not!" he shouted.
"That is what I told 'Professor' Bones here," Kimberley said, "but..."
"No wonder you can climb roofs without ladders," Emily said happily. "You are a wizard. It makes sense! But then again, wouldn't that make you, and the professor, and that girl, monsters?"
"Oh, so my life is some sort of spin-off to the Harry Potter books, is that it?" Shaun continued angrily. "I'm not going ANYWHERE, you hear me? I AM NOT GOING ANYWHERE!"
"Well, regardless," Abraham continued, "if you refuse to go, or send him, I will just modify your memories." He pointed the stick at Shaun. "Memorate."
In an instant, he was knocked backwards, his stick falling to the ground. Shaun had been thinking "Shieldex" at the moment.
"Oh my," Kimberley said slowly. "You just made a professor lose his own memories."
Shaun hit the monster with his plastic sword. It turned into a green-skinned humanoid. "He's a monster," Shaun said in shock. Kimberley gasped as she picked up the stick. "He's not dead, though, as my sword's made of plastic."
"It must be an actual goblin," Emily said in shock.
The goblin stood up. "So, that's how you want to play it, eh?" he said, grinning evilly. His eyes were glowing red. "Well, then, DIE! Tot estik!" Nothing happened.
"What did you say?" Emily asked.
"Tot estik!" Nothing happened. "TOT ESTIK!" the goblin shouted.
"I believe I've got this wand," Kimberley said. Pointing it to the goblin, she shouted, "Tot estik."
A green light hit the goblin. It fell to the ground, full of blood. She checked it for a pulse. "And?" Emily asked.
"As dead as a doorbell," she replied.
Shaun stared at the goblin. How could this thing actually exist? Mythical creatures do not exist! And neither does magic! Everything... Everything that has happened must have been an elaborately detailed dream... That's all it could be, right? Shaun pinched himself. It hurt. It was no dream. Everything was real.
The front door slammed shut when Shaun came to his senses. "What-"
He turned around, and he quickly looked back at the goblin. His aunt and his cousin both wore gas masks and Shaun began coughing. He barely noticed that Kimberley was coughing as well. "Sorry," his aunt said.
Then, nothing. Everything was gone. He felt too tired to move. All went blank. His mind, however, didn't. It was, on the contrary, even more active than before.

*****

"Good thing that wasn't toxic."
Shaun could hear, but he couldn't see. Why was he hearing weird sounds? Beep... beep... beep... If he was in a hospital... what was going on?
"But I don't understand," he heard his aunt Maddie say. "How could the attacker do such a thing if I didn't detect him?"
"Could be secret agents," an unfamiliar, feminine voice replied. "You never know. Luckily you two had gas masks, otherwise you'd both end up like they did."
"Unconsciousness for ten days?" Shaun heard Emily ask.
"Levitamo floatiskey," he hard the unfamiliar girl mutter. "Yes, you two'd be sleeping for ten days straight."
Shaun quickly sat up. "You're a goblin!" he shouted angrily. Four people were staring at him.
The room was full of a green-coloured mist, as though it was a toxic gas. The four ladies looking at him wore gas masks, but he and Kimberley didn't have any. The sound he heard was annoying. Beep... beep... beep... Shaun pulled his left arm away, and the beeping stopped.
"Actually," one of the girls said, "I'm a human witch, and you're awake days earlier than expected."
"Yeah," the other one said, "the Sleeping Gas Spell usually puts the victims to sleep for ten days... and I see the girl's waking up too."
Kimberley stirred as she slowly sat up. Her hands were gloved, instead of her right hand being bandaged.
"Hey," the girl closest to Kimberley said, "how are you feeling?"
"Weak, but okay," Kimberley answered.
"Professor Pan will be picking you to up in five days," the other girl said, "which means you two are both students of Frogwings."
"But--"
Shaun was rudely interrupted by his own aunt. "Shaun Thomas Benjamin Engiabo and Kimberley Sarah Dawn Tyron, in the same school... isn't that lovely?"
Shaun shook his head, thinking 'Levitamo floatiskey'. A glass bowl was levitated to him. He then threw it to the girl nearest to him.
"Teleki glass bowl," she muttered, moving the glass bowl to the table it was on. "Nice try, although how you levitated it, I have no idea," she said.
"Shaun," Maddie began, "that symbol... It's--"
"Japanese for ice," Shaun interrupted. "But I can't have gotten it from Voldemort." Kimberley and Emily both giggled.
"Quite true," Emily said, "as he isn't real. But you are."
"What Emily said is true," Maddie continued. "You got that symbol from somebody named Tom Slasher. Kim has the Japanese symbol for fire on her right hand, which is why it was bandaged the whole time."
"Who's Kim?" Kimberley asked.
"You are," Maddie said. "Saying 'Kimberley' all the time isn't as good. Anyway, the fire symbol was given to her by Tia Slasher, Tom's wife."
"Were our parents spellcasters?" Shaun asked.
"Yes," Maddie said. "I'm one as well."
"So, they weren't fighters?" Shaun asked.
"No."
"So I cannot be a wizard and a fighter simul--"
"I think you can," the girl near Kimberley interrupted.
"So why don't I have a sword yet?" Shaun asked. "Or is that too expensive?" Kimberley giggled at this, while Emily merely facepalmed.
"Gret vagura," the girl next to Shaun said. "Ehñi sor tiko tennor ehñu éhnner Faravlergen lezu zunder vorrichen zunar foutellen."
"Is that so?" Shaun asked. He didn't know how, but he understood the mysterious speech. It translated to 'good question. He won't survive his first Frogwings lesson without worrying about mistakes'.
"Huh?" Kimberley looked confused. "Shaun, what are you...?"
"Ehñi urago tiko lir ir libehal!" the girl next to Kimberley said, talking over her. Shaun translated it as 'he must not fall in love'.
"Ran ehñi duka izen... line té ranèttu seln ehn sunilan ehñi iste tiko estìnummar er seln mitali!" the other girl said. Shaun translated that as 'if he does, then... it had better be one who he is not destined to be with'.
"What on Earth are you talking about?" Shaun asked angrily.
"Ryu sarmik tôténestiek ehña!" the girl who was next to Shaun said. Shaun translated the sentence as 'let's just kill him'. Only after five seconds did he realize that.
"SHIELDEX!" Shaun shouted, leaping up quickly and getting off the bed. All the girls in the room and Aunt Maddie were confused.
"Dom ral tiko vreshtanden," the girl next to Kimberley said slowly. "Dom sarmik ral tiko vreshtanden." So they didn't understand, apparently.
"Sektné ral dom, the other girl said. "Ehñe orok tiko karest iner sorce... Tiko zunder oe rivand..." Shaun understood the last part as 'he can't cast any spell... not without a wand'.
"Terru... ehñe iste ehn setru telle!" the girl next to Kimberley said in shock. Shaun translated that as 'unless he's one of them'.
"One of who?" Shaun asked.
"Damn line," the other girl said. "Lekuis ler ehñe vreshtanden istokri! Reni liainkia, ehñe orok tiko seratik ler istokri!" Shaun translated it as 'damn it. Looks like he understands us! But luckily, he can't speak like us'.
"Et amun?" Shaun asked. Everybody gasped in shock. He had said 'oh really' in the mysterious language.
"ET DARMUN!" the girl next to Kimberley shouted in shock. "EHÑE OROK SERATIK LINA!"
"That was Draconian..." Kimberley muttered. Then she snapped her fingers. "Of course! Retu istex Drakuunèon!" she exclaimed.
"Prezaru Drakuunèon, tii," the girl next to Shaun said in surprise.
"Present Draconian?" Shaun asked. The girls just shrugged.
"Thomas - your father - could speak Draconian," Maddie said. "If you can too, then you're a half-blood wizard. See, your mother - my sister - was 100% human, while your father was Inhuman."
"I'm part human?" Shaun asked.
"Yes. It must come as a shock to you," Maddie said slowly.
"Not really," Shaun said slowly, his calmness slowly being overcome by rage. "How did Mom and Dad really die?"
"Tom and Tia Slasher used the Poison Gas Spell, and don't hit yourself in the face," she added, as Shaun responded with a facepalm. "Both of your parents were poisoned and died quickly, yet you two didn't die."
"Both our parents?!" Kimberley asked in shock.
"Yes, both your parents died at the same time," Maddie said. "And both Shaun's and Kimberley's parents were one member human, one member Inhuman. That makes you both half-human, half-Inhuman. Knowing Shaun's mother and Kimberley's father, they were probably holding a meeting to plan your futures by making you two get married when you turn eighteen."
"Nie hom nie," the girl next to Shaun said.
"Beslis nie hom nie," the girl next to Kimberley replied. "Ons is gedoem. Gedoem!"
"You know we speak Afrikaans, right?" Emily asked.
"I don't," Kimberley replied.
"That was just an assumption, though, wasn't it?" Shaun asked.
"Yes," Maddie answered. "Nonetheless, it matters not, for they're both dead."
"So how did we survive?" Kimberley asked.
"You two are somehow immune to the effects of poison gas," Maddie answered, ignoring Shaun's facepalming this time, "and it's a long story. All I'll tell you is this: if you were to be trapped inside a gas chamber full of poisonous gas, you'd both have five days to live if you can't get out, no matter how toxic it is. Even nerve gas won't kill you in less than an hour."
"No, but that's impossible!" Kimberley exclaimed.
"It's true," Maddie said. "But now, you two are up way past your curfew."
"What time is it?" Shaun asked.
"It's time to sleep, cousin," Emily said.
"Now, what was the Sleeping Gas Spell's chant again...?" Maddie asked.
"Slaapenzenkensempra," Emily replied.
"Thanks, Emily. SLAAPENZENKENSEMPRA!" Maddie shouted.
Quickly, Shaun felt weak. He fell asleep faster than he could stop himself. He was furious now. Why did his aunt lie to him about his parents? She said his parents died because of terrorists! But it doesn't matter anymore...

CHAPTER 2
DEADLIER THAN POISON GAS

Thud thud thud.
Somebody knocked on the door. A young girl was lazily lying on the carpeted floor, her stockinged feet on the couch.
"Erika!" she called, as an older girl ran into the room to the front door, wearing a French maid outfit and yellow rubber gloves.
"I'm going, I'm going!" the girl replied as she opened the door. "Alan... hi..."
"Erika, what's with the maid outfit?" the visitor asked.
"Oh, I'm cleaning the house," she replied.
"Ah. If I didn't know any better, I'd think you were trying to seduce me or something," the visitor replied, laughing. "Can I come in?"
"Sure. Siobhan!"
"Okay, I get it, you want to be alone with Alanthreous," the girl lying on the floor said, getting up and picking her shoes up from under the table. "I'll be going to my room, then."
"Actually, I was going to ask you to make pour some fruit juice, sis," Erika replied.
"Oh," Siobhan said quickly, sitting on the couch and putting her shoes on. She rushed to the kitchen.
"Don't run in the house, Siobhan!" Erika said angrily.
"Let her, she's just ten years old. You act like you're twenty-eight, you know," Alan replied.
"I do not!" Erika retorted.
"Relax," Alan said quickly, as Siobhan came back and handed him and Erika their glasses. "Just joking, jeez..."
"Siobhan, go to your room," Erika said.
"I knew you were going to say that," Siobhan said calmly, walking to her room. She opened the door silently, and closed it quickly. She then removed her shoes and put them under her bed. She took a letter from her desk and began to read it.

Dear Siobhan

I've missed you so much! I haven't seen you since you were only five years old. I hope you can still remember me.

How are you and your sisters? I'm sorry to hear about your mother. I hope she's doing better now, I've only just heard about the car accident. My boss told me to come spend time with you four girls, until your mother's out of the hospital and ready to work again. I'll probably be arriving in five days, so spend the $500 wisely, okay?

I can't say how sorry I am for divorcing your mother, but the truth is that she had an affair with another man, and not those lies that she's told you. Don't tell Dixie yet, she isn't ready, but I know you are ready, for you are wiser than a thirteen-year old girl.

I'm doing as well as I can with my ex-wife in the hospital. It makes me wish that we had never even divorced. Maybe then she'd not have gotten in that accident... I miss you a lot, please write back when you can!

Love
Your father

Siobhan sat on the ground, cross-legged, reading through the letter several times. So her mother had an affair with somebody else? She felt hatred towards her mother, instead of compassion. A small part of her had wished that her mother had died in the car accident, or that somebody at the hospital and switch her oxygen intake with nitrogen or something. She sighed as she got up again and put the letter back on the desk, then she pulled the chair out. She took a piece of paper and a pen, and began to write in a beautiful handwriting that was not like that of normal girls her age.

Dear father

I miss you too! I can remember when we were at the fun fair in 2001, on my birthday, you gave me a Pikachu plushie. I still have it.

Mom's going to be taken in for surgery in two days, but at the moment she's on oxygen tanks with an oxygen mask. It'd be nice to see you again, father! I really miss you a lot. And I promise not to tell Dixie about the real reason for the divorce, at least not until she is ready for it. And thanks for the money, father!

Other than Mom being in hospital, I'm doing okay. Since we can't go to hospital because it's too far, I usually send e-mails to the hospital requesting information, and so on. And since Mom's in hospital, we can't go to school, so we're doing some chores around home... well, most of the time. I spend more time being lazy than doing anything else, but I also help out my sisters when they start crying over what happened to mom, so I guess I have an important role in keeping my sisters calm despite my laziness.

Dixie's taking it the hardest, but that's understandable, right? She's just two years younger than I am. Most of the time she locks herself up in her room, and she won't talk to anybody except me. Basically, in terms of the chores we're doing for mom, she's lazier than even
I am, since she spends most of her time crying in her room and not even noticing that there are visitors here.

Erika is doing okay herself, and with her boyfriend cheering her up - yes, she has one already - she's a bit better than me, emotion-wise. She cleans the house every day, wearing her silly maid outfit for no reason. I still don't know where she got it from. Regardless, her boyfriend's helping her and Marcel with homework - those three are in the same classroom, so I guess it's helpful, right?

Marcel's doing okay, too, but only now and then. While she has no boyfriend yet, she is helping with cooking, gardening and even shopping, thanks to the neighbors helping out with money and taking her to the shops. I'm amazed that she is skilled at cooking, though - Erika can't even make toast without burning it to a crisp, and Marcel's food tastes like the food at that hotel we went to before the divorce.

I wish you come home soon. I truly miss you a lot, even more than Erika and Marcel do! Dixie probably won't remember you, though.

Your loving daughter
Siobhan

Siobhan quickly put her shoes on again, and left her room, going to the front door.
"Where are you going?" Erika asked.
"Oh, I have to give something to the postman," Siobhan said.
"You've written another letter?" Erika replied sarcastically. "Go then, give it to him, then go back to your room."
Siobhan opened the door and ran to the mailman. "Good afternoon, Mr. Melna!"
The mailman stopped when he saw the young girl, and he smiled. "Good afternoon to you too, lass. I'm sorry to hear about yer mother, I hope she'll be okay."
"I hope so too," Siobhan lied, when in actuality, she wished her mother died. "Anyway, I have a letter that I've written to my father."
"Ah, how is he?" the mailman asked.
"He's doing as well as he can with mom being in hospital," Siobhan said. "He wishes that they never got divorced."
"Ah, that Eric Cruz!" Mr. Melna said, reminiscing over the past. "I remember teaching him Irish when he was a young lad."
"He speaks Irish?" Siobhan asked.
"Aye, he does, and he took extra classes. Sure, most students mocked him for it, mocking him and beating him up for things like not having a social life like they did, but in truth, yer father didn't care. He prefered being able to speak multiple languages to having a social life."
"Dad was bullied?!" Siobhan exclaimed in shock.
"Aye, he was, but he pulled through, ignoring the bullies. He was a brave lad, I'll give ya that. Anyway, you haven't given me the letter yet."
Siobhan handed the letter to Mr. Melna. "Thanks, Mr. Melna!"
"No problem, lass!" Mr. Melna said, walking off.
Siobhan smiled as she went back inside. "What are you smiling about?" Erika asked as Siobhan entered the house.
"Oh, nothing, the mailman knows Dad, even taught him Irish," Siobhan answered, closing the door. She then passed a shocked Erika and went to her room again, removing her shoes and lying on her stomach atop her bed.

*****

"Sis?"
Siobhan woke up with a jerk. "Huh-wha?" Siobhan turned around to see a girl smaller than her stare at her through the eyes of a gas mask. Siobhan screamed as the girl giggled and removed her gas mask. Siobhan gasped from fear.
"Sorry," Dixie said.
"Dixie! Don't do that!" Siobhan breathed, slowly getting over the shock of being startled. "I'm starting... to think that... you want to... become a criminal..."
"Sorry, Siobhan," Dixie said meekly. "I just wanted to scare you to feel a bit better, that's all." Dixie put the gas mask on again, and Siobhan quickly covered herself with her blanket, hiding her face as well.
"Well, while you scare people to feel better, you make them feel worse," Siobhan said slowly. "Where did you get the thing anyway? I thought it was locked up in Mom's room!"
"Oh, Marcel has the keys to Mom's room, and she got it for me with her and Erika's gas masks," Dixie replied.
"What?" Siobhan asked in shock. "You all have those scary things?"
"Yeah, and yours is in your closet," Dixie said. "It's been there since after that time we had to wear those to get used to wearing them."
"During those threats of a chemical war?" Siobhan asked.
"Yep! You were so scared that you spent most of the time in your room, and Mom was furious. Three weeks after those threats turned out to be fake, we all could remove the gas masks, right? So we removed it and you kept yours in the closet since. Mom took ours off after we terrorized you with them, because of how scared you are of gas masks."
"And now you have the things back?" Siobhan asked.
"Yep," Dixie answered.
"Oh man..." Siobhan said slowly, then felt someone tugging at the blanket. "Hey!"
"Siobhan, please," Dixie asked. "I want you to get over your fear... then we could be the 'gas mask sisters' or something."
"NO!" Siobhan replied angrily. "NO WAY!"
"It was an order," an older voice said. Siobhan recognized it as Erika's.
"NO WAY! I'LL NEVER DO IT!" Siobhan shouted. Then she felt a sudden sharp pain through her heart and she screamed in pain.
"Sister!" Erika and Dixie both exclaimed.

The pain felt like no other. It hurt her heart more than it hurt anything else. It was as though her heart was trying to kill her from inside, beating so fast that, had she been younger, she'd be dead from such fast heartbeats. She knew she was different from normal people, but how, she didn't know. Her heart hurt. She closed her eyes in pain. Everything was red. She felt as though she was going to die. She couldn't hear a thing. She couldn't breathe. She couldn't feel anything but coldness. She couldn't even move. Then, everything disappeared. Her pain was gone, and she saw nothing but a black void. She felt nothing anymore.
Was this how it felt to be dead? she wondered. Was this really how death felt like?
She began to think of how painful it was. She couldn't breathe. Did someone try to kill her and her sisters with a poisonous gas? Was that why they tried to get her to wear a gas mask? Or was it them who tried to kill her? Her own blood sisters?

*****

She sat up straight. Siobhan was still on her bed, still wearing the same blue dress, the same black stockings, the same red mittens. She heard voices in the living room. She snuck to her bedroom door and put her ear against it and heard an unfamiliar voice talking.
"I'm very sorry. Are there any other relatives of yours alive?"
"Yes," she heard the familiar voice of Marcel answer. "Our dad, but we don't know where he is or if he even knows about Mom."
"What is his name?" the unfamiliar man asked.
"Eric?" Siobhan heard Erika reply slowly. "I'm not certain, though."
"Where's your younger sisters?" the unfamiliar man asked.
"Well, Dixie went to bed and Siobhan has a fever, I think," Marcel answered. Siobhan took a mitten off and placed her bare hand on her forehead. It was hot.
"So who's taking care of you four?" the unfamiliar man asked.
"That would be the neighbors," Erika answered.
"Can you think of anybody who would want your mother dead?"
The words of the man kept replaying in her head. Siobhan slowly walked to her bed, lying on it, putting her mitten on again. She stared at the ceiling. Her mother was dead. She started to regret wishing that her mother had died. Then she heard the door slam and a car driving away. She closed her eyes and sighed. She heard her door open, and someone sitting next to her. Then she heard the door slam shut.
"Dixie, you're still awake?" Erika asked.
"Yeah," she replied. "Is Mom really...?"
"Uh huh," Marcel answered. "Mom's really dead. Basically, we're orphans."
"No we're not!" Siobhan exclaimed, sitting up suddenly. Dixie leapt off the bed.
"Mom's dead, Siobhan!" Erika exclaimed.
"But Dad isn't!" Siobhan shouted back.
"We shouldn't be fighting," Dixie said, trying her best to make her voice quiet. A short silence went by.
"Dixie's right," Marcel said softly. "We shouldn't be fighting among ourselves. And who are you talking about, Siobhan? Dad's not here, he doesn't give a damn about us!"
"You're wrong," Siobhan said. "We've kept contact with letters, ever since he sent me that birthday card earlier this year."
Her sisters looked at her. "What?" Marcel asked in shock.
"Dad said he'd be coming home in five days," Siobhan said.
"No wonder you were talking about him and smiling earlier today," Erika said. "So what are we going to do?"
"How'd Mom die?" Siobhan asked guiltily.
"Somebody exchanged her oxygen tank with some tank that had a gas that caused her to freeze to death," Marcel replied. "That's how I understand it."
Siobhan sighed. "So now what? Dad'll have to take us in, and that means we'll have to find jobs or something."
"Dixie's too young--" Marcel began, but Dixie interrupted.
"I can do translations, can I not? Mom taught me Afrikaans, I can translate important Afrikaans articles from South Africa to English!"
"You speak Afrikaans?!" Erika and Marcel said in shock.
"Girls!" Siobhan exclaimed. "Let's get some sleep, and relax."

*****

Thud thud thud thud thud.
Siobhan woke up to the loud knocking. "Ugh..."
She got up, slipped on her shoes and went to the front door. "Who is it?" she asked tiredly.
"It's your father," the reply came. Siobhan immediately opened the front door and hugged her father tightly, tears streaming out of her eyes.
"Oh, father..."
"Shhh, it's okay, honey... Dad's here," her father said. "The moment I found out about your mother's death, I immediately packed my stuff, delivered a note to my client, and drove all the way here."

Later that day, when Siobhan's sisters were all awake, Siobhan went to ask them at what time their mother had died.
"It was at about four in the afternoon," Erika said.
"When'd I lose consciousness?" Siobhan asked.
"The same time," Marcel asked. "Must be coincidence, though. Are you sure you ought to be up right now?"
"When I lost consciousness... it felt as though I died. At first I thought somebody tried killing us with poisonous gas... I feel like killing myself..."
"I think I should tell you girls the truth," their father said suddenly behind them, startling them. "And Siobhan, don't even think about it, okay? Your mother wouldn't want that."
The girls all sat on the couches opposite their father's. He looked at them all. "You see, you girls are all unique - more unique than even most people are. You see, you four all have gifts. Special powers, that sort of thing."
"What?" Dixie exclaimed.
"I should know, I myself have special powers," their father said, then he conjured a ball of burning gases in his hand. "I control fire. Your mother... she used to control ice."
"You're not serious!" Erika said in shock.
"Whoa," Marcel said.
"Siobhan, judging by what you felt at the time, I'd say you have the power of Heart - which, as a result, makes you more forgiving than your sisters. I had that power myself, you know. You also will notice when someone close to you has passed away - in this case, your mother. As a result, though, when you feel sad because of it, you feel like killing yourself. In other words, sadness is deadlier than poison gas, in your case. I too felt the pain, but I've become used to it, during my third year at the Phoenixflare Magic School, when most of my family members were murdered brutally. I didn't lose consciousness, but as it was the first time somebody close to you had died, you probably lost consciousness, didn't you?"
"Yes, I did," Siobhan answered. Then, to herself, she muttered, "No wonder..."
"It'll seem as though you'd have gotten a fever, though, but it'll go by eventually. Dixie, you're the youngest, and you tend to wear gas masks a lot, as Siobhan has told me through a letter. I know very little of you - and your older sisters - so I'm going to have to guess here. I'm guessing you control poison."
"Waah!" Dixie cried. "I don't want to poison my sisters!"
"You'll probably be able to cure them, Dixie," their father said. "I don't know. Erika, you control fabric, if I had to guess. Where did you get a French maid outfit?"
"Uhhh, made it myself?" Erika said, blushing. "How'd you know about that?"
"Siobhan told me via letter. Marcel, you're the most mature sister, and thus the most responsible one. My guess would be that you can control light."
Marcel snapped her fingers and a small orb of light appeared above it. "Interesting," she said in a bored monotone.
"Now, girls," their father said, "I'm going to enroll you in a magic school, okay? One nearby here."
"What?!" the four girls exclaimed simultaneously.
"I'm a wizard. That makes you all half-wizards," their father said. Then he took a wand out of his pocket and waved it, muttering "Clunixia."
He split in two, the second one not holding a wand. "No way," Siobhan said excitedly. "That's awesome!"
"It is, isn't it?" Mr. Cruz said. "Ixclunixia." The clone disappeared in a puff of smoke. "One of the best magic schools I know of would be Frogwings, mainly because they learn spells during their first year - the one nearby does that in the second year."
"Can we go there?" Siobhan asked quickly.
"Where? Frogwings?" her father asked.
"Yep! Please?"
"That's in South Africa, you know."
"Pretty please?" Dixie asked.
"Oh, I dunno..."
"We want to go there," Marcel said.
"I don't," Erika said quickly. "What about Alanthreous van Graan?"
"He's the next door neighbor's son?" Mr. Cruz asked in shock. Siobhan nodded. "Well, well, what do you know! You know, his parents are wizards too, so maybe he's a wizard as well!"
Erika's mouth fell open. "What...?"
"Anyway, we probably should wait for the funeral, it's in ten days. I know the headmistress personally, so I can notify her about this," Mr. Cruz said. "She'll understand, she was actually your mother's rival back when they were just eleven."
"But what about work?" Siobhan asked. "You'd have to move to South Africa, wouldn't you?"
"Firstly, I can cast the Teleportation Spell," Mr. Cruz said. "Secondly, you girls'll spend every term at the school, and not at home, except during vacations. And I have a call to make right now, in private."
"Okay," Siobhan said calmly, getting up and walking to her room. Her sisters followed her, but went to their own rooms instead. Siobhan opened her bedroom door, and went inside, closing the door silently. She walked to her bed, and slipped off her shoes. She sighed. So she was gifted with the power of heart, and so was her father. So that's why they forgave the people who constantly bully them so easily. However, when her mother had died, they both felt the pain, and she had lost consciousness, while her sisters had thought she had gotten a fever...

After ten minutes had gone by, she got up from bed and walked to her closet, removing her mittens. She opened the door, and shivered. She went to a dresser nearby, and put the mittens in the top drawer, taking a pair of black gloves out and putting them on. "I think I'll lock the door and plunge the room into darkness," she said softly to herself.
She slowly walked to her bedroom door, and locked it. Then she shut the curtains of her bedroom, making everything dark. She closed the windows, then walked to the closet again. She had often wandered around in the darkness in her room, so she had a good memory of where everything was. She sighed. She remembered her mother's last words to her. "Don't worry about me, Siobhan. I'll be alright, it's just a check-up to see whether I'm sick or something." An hour or so later, she got in a car accident, and two days later, she died. Siobhan took a deep breath.
"Here goes something," she muttered to herself, putting on the gas mask that lay in her closet for so long. She then climbed into the closet, shut the doors and lay inside on top of a rug she had placed there if she wanted to hide. It was comfortable, so she didn't mind lying in her closet. She could see perfectly everything inside her closet, from the dresses that she rarely wore to the skirts and tops that she wore often. She could hear her father's voice from the living room.
"Are you telling me that they're Nobodies?" Mr. Cruz said in shock. Then he sighed. "So they're not human? At all?" Another short silence. "What do you mean, there's somebody with two Nobodies? That's virtually impossible!" Another short silence, and Mr. Cruz sighed again. "I understand, but killing them? Are you insane?" Another silence, this time slightly longer than before. "So I'm to kill the four Nobodies when the two Inhuman Nobodies pop up someplace as Super Inhumans?" A shorter silence this time. "I'll try my best, then." It was silent for several minutes. "I see. Goodbye."
Siobhan heard him slump onto the couch. She sighed. "Dad's a murderer?" she muttered to herself. "I shouldn't tell anyone, though, wouldn't want to give away my hiding spot to my sisters or anybody else."
She opened her closet door again, removed her dress and stockings, and threw the stockings on her bed. She hung the dress up in the closet, and took a black top and skirt out. She put those on, and went to the dresser again, this time opening a drawer underneath the one containing the gloves. She took a pair of black tights and socks out, and closed the drawer. Then she put the tights on, with the stockings over it, and the socks over her stockings. It was very hot, but she didn't mind. She took her gloves off, opening the top drawer again, and taking a pair of black gloves out - these were elbow-length, instead of wrist-length like the other gloves she wore. She put it on, wearing her wrist-length gloves over it. She closed the drawer and took a recording device from her desk, then she went to her closet again, and put on a black jacket and scarf. She frowned. Here she was, trying to get over her fear of gas masks, and now she went a bit overboard. But she didn't care much, because she didn't want her sisters to know. She climbed back in her closet and closed it. She sighed.

Thud. Thud thud thud. Thud thud.
She sat up. Somebody was knocking on the front door. She heard her dad open it. She quickly activated her recording device to record any conversation, just in case.
"Ah, so you're the agent I was to meet?" Mr. Cruz said in a pleasant voice.
"Yes," the visitor asked. She had a voice that made Siobhan flinch. "I bring news about Black."
"Ah, so what could you find out from her?" Mr. Cruz said in a serious voice that Siobhan had never heard him use.
"She had knocked her godson out with sleeping gas, along with her godson's future ally," the woman said. "She and her own daughter wore gas masks, so they weren't knocked out."
"I see," Mr. Cruz said. "Where are they?"
"At a hospital. They're planning on sending the three kids to Frogwings."
"What?" Mr. Cruz said in shock. "But the girls shouldn't be in contact with the two Nobodies!"
"Correct. It means that the orders are to kill the girls immediately," the woman said.
"I see," Mr. Cruz said slowly. "How exactly am I to do that?"
"Worry not, agent Cruz," the woman said. "I've sorted it out already, we just need to get out of here and wait until midnight."
"Midnight? What for?"
"Poison gas," the woman said excitedly. "The entire building will be flooded with it, and whether they wear gas masks or not, they'll still die, as the gas is highly toxic to come into contact with... unless, of course, the girls get the idea to wear gas masks and biohazard suits or something that covers their skins entirely, but I doubt they'd be wearing gloves in this warm weather."
"As far as I know, the youngest likes wearing gas masks, and her sister has a fear of it. Her eldest two sisters both don't wear it as often," Mr. Cruz said.
"I see," the woman said. "What are their names?"
"The eldest two girls are Marcel Amelia Zetske Edith, and Erika Xylla Anabeth Chrissie Tina," Mr. Cruz replied. "The younger one is Siobhan Uma Nadine. The youngest one is Dixie Ellen Alexandra Daria."
"Such long names," the woman said, obviously in shock. "So those are the four Nobodies?"
"Yes," Mr. Cruz answered.
"Intriguing. You and your dead wife are Somebodies, yet your daughters are Nobodies?" the woman asked. The door slammed shut and Siobhan quickly stopped recording the conversation.

Siobhan's heart was beating frantically. So her father intended on killing his only daughters. She had no choice. She had to contact her sisters. She quickly took her phone from her blue dress that was hanging above her, then sent a message to all her sisters: "Cm 2 mai roem w/ GMs". She quickly rushed out of the closet and unlocked the door, hiding behind it in case her murderous father came in. When the door opened, her sisters all came in wearing their gas masks. Siobhan quickly shut the door and locked it.
"Don't say a word, not until I tell you why I alerted you here," Siobhan said quickly.
"Who are you? What did you do with Siobhan?" Marcel asked. "And why'd you use code?"
"Yeah, last we checked you were afraid of gas masks," Erika added.
"Is it an emergency?" Dixie asked. Siobhan nodded. "So that's why you asked us to come to your room with our gas masks?" Siobhan nodded again. "Why?"
"Dad's planning on killing us," Siobhan said. "Our lives is more important than being a-afraid of something, isn't it? I also used code, since it'd be hard to figure out what I was saying if somebody could trace our messages."
"Yeah, being scared of something isn't as important as remaining alive," Marcel said. "But why would Dad want to kill us?"
"Where do you get all this nonsense?" Erika said angrily.
"It's the truth, I heard Dad and some woman planning on killing us," Dixie said. Her room was just as close to the living room as Siobhan's.
"I even got proof," she said, holding the recording device in her hand. She set the volume to low, and signalled her sisters to go the closet and listen to it. She didn't want to listen to it twice.
"Dad's really going to let us die?" Erika said in shock. "And why do they call us Nobodies and not Somebodies? What's the difference between the two?"
"I dunno," Marcel said, "but I do know that we need to get out of here."
"Without them noticing?" Siobhan said quickly. "How? No, I propose we all just put on black outfits, no matter how warm it is in Phoenix, and then... well, I dunno, somehow survive? I mean, we don't have bio-whatever suits, do we?"
Marcel left the room. Siobhan looked at Dixie and Erika, who shrugged. "What's up with her?" Dixie asked.
"I dunno," Erika said. "It's as though she has lost it completely."
Three minutes of silence went by, then Marcel entered the room again, wearing lots of black clothing, so that she looked almost similar to Siobhan. It was only their hair colours, hair styles and their lengths that differed; Siobhan had long brown hair whilst the tall Marcel had long, wavy red hair. Dixie, who was the shortest of the four Cruz girls, had long brown hair that she always wore in ponytails, and Erika, who was slightly shorter than Marcel, but longer than Siobhan, had short red hair. They all had green eyes, however.
"Well, they doubted that we'd wear warm clothing in this weather, didn't they?" Marcel said. "So, I figured, why not do what they thought we wouldn't do?"
Erika sighed. "You do realize they'd notice if we just leave the house whilst wearing these clothes, right? Our hair's visible, it's a bright red colour."
"Not if we wear hooded jackets," Siobhan said, covering her head with the hood of her jacket. Marcel did the same, then looked at the clock on her phone.
"You two should hurry," she said quickly. "It's almost five o' clock!"
Erika and Dixie both rushed out of Siobhan's room in a hurry as Siobhan checked her phone for the time. "You lied just to get them to hurry up, didn't you?" she asked. "My phone says it's one o' clock."
"Yeah," Marcel answered, "but our lives are in danger, right?"
"True. Lying to save our lives is helpful for now."
"Also, I found a bottle of methylenedioxymethamphetamine in Mom's room," Marcel said.
"What?!" Siobhan exclaimed. Then she sighed. "Mind telling me what that is?"
"Drugs," Marcel said. "Mom was a drug addict."
"No way," Siobhan said slowly. "And we didn't even notice?"
"Nope," Marcel said. "She hid the symptoms of drug abuse pretty well."
"Darn," Siobhan said slowly. "That must've been why she was going to the hospital that day..."
"Possibly," Marcel said. "Oh, hey, princess."
Dixie came into the room, already hooded. "I'm not a princess," she said quickly.
Erika rushed into the room, hooded as well. "Marcel, you liar."
"What? At least now we got our wish of being 'gas mask sisters', as Dixie put it," Marcel answered in an insouciant way. Dixie giggled.
"And what about Dad trying to kill us 'Nobodies'?" Siobhan asked angrily.
"Well, we'll just have to wait until midnight and hope that we can escape then," Marcel said. "If we can't, then at least we'll have tried-- where are you going, Siobhan?"
"Mom's room," Siobhan answered. "Maybe we can find some way out from there."
"Good idea," Erika said happily. "Maybe a spell book or something - if our parents really were wizards."
"Then let's go," Dixie said encouragingly.

*****

"Found it!" Siobhan exclaimed, holding a wand and a book in her gloved hands. They tore the room apart to find something that could help them escape. "What's the time?"
"Excellent!" Erika said excitedly. "So? Is there a way out?"
"Relax, she's just found it, give her a break," Marcel said, sounding just as excited, looking on her phone. "And it's five minutes before midnight."
"Now what happens?" Dixie asked. Siobhan turned the pages, eventually stopping.
"Teleportation!" Siobhan said softly. "It's a spell for fifth years, apparently... but we should try casting it anyway."
Erika and Marcel placed their hands on Siobhan's shoulders. "Relax," Erika said. "You won't be able to try if you're tense."
"She's right," Marcel said. "Relax, but not too much, otherwise you'll fall asleep."
Siobhan took several deep breaths. She felt calmer and relaxed. "Two minutes before midnight," Dixie said worried.
"Teleportia!" Siobhan said clearly, but nothing happened. "Ugh, that was an epic fail and a half."
"You didn't wave your wand," Marcel said. "When Dad did that spell that cloned him, he waved his wand."
"It says here you should also name the location of where you want to go to," Dixie added.
"That makes sense," Erika said. "Who'd want to end up teleporting into a volcano by accident?"
The ground started shaking as green gas came from the ground in the house. "Uh oh!" Dixie exclaimed. "They're killing us right now!"
"Poison gas bombs hidden in the carpets while we were in our rooms?" Erika exclaimed. "They must have done it with magic!"
"Or while we were sleeping," Marcel said slowly. "After all, we wouldn't be able to do anything then!"
"You're right," Siobhan said, "we were sleeping then. They could've put the bombs under the carpets then!"
"Hurry up!" Erika said quickly. "Before we get gassed!"
"You're not helping," Dixie said. "She has to concentrate again! Right?"
Marcel nodded affirmatively. "Dixie's right. Siobhan, pretend as though there isn't poison gas here. Just relax and try again. And remember the location and waving the wand!"
"I will try," Siobhan replied.
"Trying's not good enough!" Erika said angrily. "HURRY UP!"
"Seriously, Erika, you're just making her more tense," Marcel said. "Relax, little sister."
"Yeah, and if Erika makes you tense again, I'll turn her into a squirrel!"
"Hey!" Erika exclaimed. Siobhan laughed.
"You know, Dixie, you're skilled at cheering people up," Siobhan said.
"Thanks, sis!" Dixie replied.
"So now you're ready to try again?" Marcel asked. Siobhan nodded.
Siobhan took several more deep breaths, feeling calmer and relaxed again. This time, waving the wand and speaking clearly, she said, "Teleportia Frogwings!"
In a sudden, they all disappeared from the room. Not a trace remained of them.

*****

"Did it work?" Marcel asked. She looked around. "Looks like it, doesn't it?"
"Yeah, and here comes somebody," Erika said quickly.
"Let's hope it's somebody understanding," Siobhan said quietly.
"Yeah," Dixie added.
The woman who walked towards the castle behind the girls stopped suddenly. "Who's there?" she asked. Her grey hair was curly, and she wore spectacles. "I know you're there, I can sense your aura!"
"Siobhan Uma Nadine," Siobhan said clearly.
"Dixie Ellen Alexandra Daria," Dixie said just as clearly.
"Erika Xylla Anabeth Chrissie Tina," Erika said.
"Marcel Amelia Zetske Edith," Marcel said last.
"Ah, the Cruz sisters, who cast the Teleportation Spell five minutes ago," the woman said. Siobhan gasped.
"How did you--" she began, but the old woman interrupted.
"You see, Aura Users - like me - can tell when spells are being cast at any time. They are valued for their ability, for they often help the magical police capture magical criminals."
"How did you know we were sisters?" Erika demanded.
"I was expecting you four, to be honest," the old woman said calmly. Matilda Cruz - your mother - sent me a letter saying that your father - Eric Cruz - planned on killing you all and that I should take you in. However, her magical dueling rival, Maddie Black, who also has the gift of seeing the future, was visiting me at the time, so when she found out about it, she used her future sight to see whether this was true. Sadly, it was, but luckily, you four were to escape."
"You mean... you knew we were going to die?" Marcel exclaimed. "AND YOU DIDN'T TRY TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT?!"
"If it wasn't Ms. Black who used the future sight, I would have," the woman answered calmly, "but she also has the blood of an Aliatunian - a race of human-like aliens capable of seeing the future. She herself doesn't know it, but regardless - she can see the future and no matter what is done, it cannot be changed."
"So... now what?" Dixie asked.
"Well, you four girls can stay here. I've already requested that Ms. Black come over tomorrow not only to meet you four girls, but also to get your things from your home..." The woman gave a deep sigh. "I'm Professor Petra Pan. I am the headmistress of Frogwings, the School of Magery."
Marcel gasped this time. "Sorry, headmistress," she said quickly, bowing. "I didn't mean to shout."
"I don't mind," the headmistress said. "Let it all out, that's what I say."
"So you d-don't mind if people shout at you out of anger?" Erika asked quickly.
"Not at all. They'll find impossible to harm me, though, but regardless, letting one's anger out makes it easier to calm the fires that rage," the headmistress said. "Are you girls hungry?"
"Are we ever!" Siobhan exclaimed happily.
"Yeah, we haven't eaten since we've discovered our father's plot," Dixie said.
"Excellent," Pan said. "Let's go in, and please do remove those masks, they're terrifying."
The four girls went in with the headmistress, and only then did they remove their gas masks. "Whoa," Dixie said, awe-struck. "So this is Frogwings?"
"It looks fantasically awesome!" Erika said, in a voice of amazement.
"It's... it's... it's awesome," Marcel mouthed.
"Yeah, it's pretty cool," Siobhan said, "but it still doesn't satiate my hunger."
"Take seats at the table in the center, and don't take the large chair in the center, that's my chair," the headmistress said. "I'm going to ask Bananablade to cook up something tasty."
"Who's 'Bananablade'?" Dixie asked.
"Ernie le Roux, also known as 'Bananablade' for his banana-shaped sword, is the chef of the school of Magery," the headmistress answered.
"Why's his sword shaped like a banana? And don't magic users use magic only?" Erika asked. Pan sighed.
"He's obsessed with bananas, and for the second question, there are spells that can only be blocked by weaponry. In his case, it would be that sword of his. It's an artifact from the Middle Ages, actually! It protects the wielder entirely from magical spells."
"What?! Really?!" Marcel exclaimed. "Awesome!"
"The sword of his changes chape too, you know. If I were to wield it, it'd become a staff. What is your favourite thing, Siobhan?"
"Most favourite things... ahhh... Pikachu, cats, keys... and black," Siobhan answered.
"Were you to wield it, chances are it would have become a giant key in your hands," Pan finished. "Anyway, keep any questions you have until when dinner's done, okay? Otherwise it'll never get done."
The headmistress left the room as the four girls took their seats. "So what do you think of the headmistress?" Erika asked. "I think she's a little... weird."
"She's nice," Dixie said quickly.
"I agree," Marcel said. "Besides, we're new to this... magic-related things, so obviously magic users would be weird."
"She's a great person," Siobhan said. "If it wasn't for this Ms. Black she was talking about outside, we'd possibly have to go into hiding someplace else. Hey, wonder if she knows what Dad meant when he called us 'Nobodies' and himself and Mom 'Somebodies'."

Ten minutes passed as the headmistress came into the room, followed by five short creatures with long ears, carrying food. Dixie squealed with excitement. "Are those elves?"
"No," the headmistress said. "These are dwarves."
"Dwarves?" Siobhan said in surprise.
"Yes," one of the dwarves said angrily, "if one more person asks that I'm going to grab my axe and axe you all to death!"
"Grimlir, that's not how you are going to treat future students," Pan said angrily.
"Future students?" he repeated.
"Yes, future students. They're all new here, and I'll personally be teaching these two the things they should've been taught for two years," Pan replied, gesturing to Erika and Marcel. "This in the time of four days, too, term starts then. I also will have to get some students then, for they're first years, like Siobhan."
"Wait, what?" Marcel asked.
"We're twelve," Erika explained. "Students of the first year come here at ten years of age - like Siobhan. Dixie, however, I don't really know about her. That's how I understand it."
"Well explained," the headmistress replied. "As for the youngest girl, she can get special non-magical classes until she is ten years old."
"No fair!" Dixie exclaimed.
"However, those classes are important, even though they won't appear as such." Pan took a deep breath. "How many languages can you speak?"
"Huh?" Marcel looked around. "Languages?"
"Learning languages at a young age usually makes it easier to learn, doesn't it?" Erika asked.
"Yes, it does," Pan said. "After all, there are many things to learn in languages."
"I speak Afrikaans," Dixie said slowly. "And also French and English and German. All fluently."
"Goddess of Light, she's smart at her age," Grimlir said in shock as the dwarves put the food down. "Muradin, you speak that Dra-whatever-ian language, don't you?"
"Draconian?" another dwarf asked. "Of course I do, I even teach it when there are students here! Not that many students take that class," he added in a sad monotone, "but still."
"I'll take it!" Dixie said quickly.
"You will?" Muradin asked.
"So will I," Siobhan said.
"Me three," Erika said.
"Count me in," Marcel added.
"Looks like you got four students for Draconian class," Pan said happily.
The dwarves bowed to the headmistress and left the room. "Aren't they going to eat here?" Dixie asked.
"No, they have their own dining room," Pan answered.
After talking about this and that, the dinner was quickly devoured. "That was absolutely the tastiest meal I have ever had," Marcel said.
"Agreed," Erika replied.
Siobhan turned to face the headmistress. "Ma'am, what do you know of 'Nobodies' and 'Somebodies'?"
Siobhan's sisters stared at her as Professor Pan turned to look at Siobhan. "Where did that come from?"
"Our father called us 'Nobodies' and himself and Mom 'Somebodies'," Siobhan answered clearly.
"You know," the headmistress replied, "I myself don't know much about that. I shall have to find this out at the library in my free time. Anyway, the guest rooms should be open now, it's the corridor to the left of here. You have the same rooms, it's the first door to the left of the corridor entrance. Good night."
"Good night, headmistress," the Cruz sisters said in unison as the headmistress got up. She waved her wand, making the dishes disappear.
"Where'd they go?" Erika asked angrily; Siobhan knew she wanted to wash them. However, Erika asked too late, for the headmistress was already outside the great hall.
"In the kitchen," Marcel said. "I guess."
"Let's get some sleep," Dixie said. Siobhan got up first, then her sisters followed suit. They went to the room they were told was theirs, and found that it looked larger than they though.
"This is a castle?" Marcel asked in amazement. "I wish I was a princess!"
"With that axe-crazy dwarf?" Erika asked.
"That'd be a laugh," Siobhan said. "Marcel would just fry the guy with magic, right?"
"She has yet to learn spells," Dixie said, getting on her bed. "Wow, four days before term starts officially? I hope I'm ready."
"So do we all," Erika said, as she and Marcel got onto their beds.
"Well, let's hope it's gonna be fun!" Siobhan exclaimed.
"Night, all," Marcel added.
"Night," the four sisters said in unison.
Aidan "the Eternal Darkness" is deceased...
I am still full of sorrow... my boyfriend, dead...

CHAPTER 3
TWINS OF THE JINJIN WILL

“You were in the sea for fifty minutes, Jane.”
“Really, Joe?”
“Yes, really.”
Joseph and Janet Simpson are twins from America who recently moved to the South African town of Fish Hoek. They live close to a beach, and the place is peace and quiet, just the way they like it.
They have an uncanny resemblance to Quote and Curly Brace from Cave Story, to the point where every time they meet someone who played the game, they had to tell them it was a coincidence. But their skins are orange and they have brown eyes and black hair. Obviously, they don’t have antennae for ears.
Joe was playing with the laptop he built, complete with internet that seems to only work when he’s around and a battery that seems to last forever. Joe and Jane both worked on the battery together.
Jane was in the water swimming. She seemed to be at ease whenever she’s in the sea. Not only that, she could also hold her breath for a long time. As she walked over to Joe she asked, “What are you doing, Joe?”
“Playing Sims 2. I’m starting with the tutorials.”
“Wait, that couple’s names sure looks like ours, don’t they?”
“Tutorial Joe and Tutorial Jane Sim? Now that you’ve mentioned it, yes, they do seem to.”
“Can I have your lemon, please?”
“Uh, sure. Brought it especially for you.”
“Thanks!”
She loves lemons.
“I think it’s getting dark, Joe. I think we need to go home now.”
“I guess so. Maybe we can try out our new Role Playing game we got just another day.”
“Yeah, let’s do that.”

When they got home, they had immediately got out their game.
“So, what do you want to be, Jane?”
“Well, what’s available?”
“Let’s see, there’s the paladin, the thief, the cleric, the wizard, the -”
“I’ll try the wizard.”
“Okay, do you want to be lawful, chaotic or neutral?”
“I’ll be lawful.”
“Okay, let’s roll your stats.”
He took out different sided dice and rolled them.
“Gosh, these dice sure do look weird.”
“The game’s based upon the D20 system used in Dungeons and Dragons. D20 is named after the twenty-sided dice that it uses, among other sided dice. They said it’s to even the odds.”
“Okay. Can we get playing now, please?”
“Sure, ah, you arrived on a hill side. To the north, you can see some smoke. To the south is the village where you had already brought a staff and some robes. What do you want to do?”
“Well, is there any other location where I can go to?
“Um, there’s a port downside the city, where you can get a boat to sail to another land.”
“I’ll, uh, go north. What do I see?”
“You see a group of drows camping.”
“Aren’t they from Dungeons and Dragons?”
“The rulebook said we can use those monsters in this game. Anyway, the drows picked up their daggers and moved towards you. What do you want to do?”
“I cast Forcenstu on each of the targets.”
“What?”
Forcenstu is an actual spell, right?”
He searched through a book that came with the game.
“The list of spells doesn’t have that in it.”
“Then make something up!”
A brief pause.
“O-o-okay, you shot multiple energy balls at the targets, killing them. You gain 90XP!”
“Great! Do I level up?”
“Uh, no, not yet. You’d still need 110 more XP to gain a level.”
“Okay, now, I search for monsters.”
“You search the forest to find two slimes...”
They played till they were called for dinner.

“What are we having for supper, dad?” asked Joe.
“We’re having pizza.”
“Yay!” shouted the children.
Their father loved his foster children very much. He was a moderately sized person with brown hair, green eyes and Caucasian skin, looking very different to Joe and Jane.

When they went to the table, they opened up the pizza lid to find out it had small fish on it.
“Why is there anchovy on the pizza, dad?” asked Joe.
“I wanted to try something different.”
“I like it!” said Jane.
“Well, you love all bitter and sour foods,” said Joe.
He took the anchovy off the pizza and started to eat it.
“Want some cool drink, anyone?” asked the father.
“Yes, please!” said the children.
“Okay, I’ve brought some grape juice.”
He poured some juice into two glasses.
“That doesn’t look like grape juice,” said Joe. “Are you sure you bought grape juice and not grapefruit juice?”
“What’s the difference?” asked the father.
“One’s bigger than the other, and they look completely different.”
“I like it,” said Jane, who had just finished drinking it.
“Just try it,” said the father.
Joe took a sip. It tasted very bitter.
“Sorry, but I can’t finish it. Let me see the bottle, please.”
“Uh, okay,” said the father.
He gave him the bottle.
“See?” said Joe. “It said Grapefruit, not grapes.”
“Well, silly me,” said the father.
“Can I have your glass, please?” asked Jane.
“Well, sure, it’s not like I’m going to drink it down myself.”
He gave her the glass.
After they finished eating, Jane asked, “Can I go to the sea again, please father?”
“Well, sure, Jane.”
“Thanks!”
She ran out the door.
“Say, father?” asked Joe.
“Yes?” said the father.
“What happened to our real parents?”
“I’ve already told you two, they were killed by drows.”
“I’m serious! It’s not like drows exist in real life!”
“You don’t know that.”
“You say that every time.”
After a brief moment of silence, Joe said,
“I’ll, uh, go to my room and surf the web.”
“See ya, my son!”
After they went to their rooms, the father sighed.
“They don’t know what they’re capable of,” said the father. “I guess I’ll enrol them at Frogwings tomorrow. After all, that’s what I’ve promised the Purple Karjam.”
Joe, who had been listening, wondered what Frogwings is, so he went on to his laptop and searched the web, only to find nothing.
“That’s strange,” he thought. “I thought this school would at least have its own website.”

Later on, when Joe and Jane were getting ready for bed, Jane asked, “What’s Frogwings?”
“Huh?” he replied.
“I overheard dad mentioning it.”
“I don’t know. Googling it revealed nothing, as if it doesn’t exist.”
“Well, whatever it is, it must be a school for talented kids like us.”
“Yeah.”
“And who’s the Purple Karjam?”
“Well, I did get some info about that. According to urban legend, there’s a weird man in purple going around the world not only doing ridiculous things, but also helping out using abilities no man is known to be capable of doing.”
“Uncle Richard is both weird and wears purple. Could he be that Purple Karjam guy?”
They think for a moment.
“Nah,” they said at the same time.
“Can we watch a movie before we go to sleep?” Jane continued.
“I don’t know if dad would like that.”
The door opened.
“Of course you can! Make sure to watch the time before going to sleep.”
“Thanks dad!” said the children.
The door closed.
“So, what movie do you want to watch,” asked Joe.
“I’m thinking Shrek.”
“I love that movie!”
They went into the lounge to find the movie.
“There it is!” Exclaimed Jane”
“Great,” said Joe. “Let’s go watch it in our room.
“But we don’t have a TV in our room.
“I’ve got a program on my laptop that would allow us to watch DVD’s on it.”
They went to the room.
“Are you sure your home-made DVD ROM works?
“Relax! I read the DVD specifications online.”
“What’s that?”
“Let’s just say that those tell you how DVD’s work.”
He opened the DVD tray, put the disk in it, and then closed it.
“Well, here goes,” he said.
When the program came up, they clicked the play button to watch the movie.
“Oh, I love this part!” said Jane.
They watched until they got tired, then turned off the laptop and went to bed.

During the night, Joe was woken up by a thud in the room. He then heard some water splashing.
“What happened, Jane?” he asked.
“I was going to get myself a midnight snack, but I tripped and fell. Then some water seemed to come from me and wet the floor.”
“You what?”
“I know what you’re thinking, Joe. The water came from my skin, not my pants.”
“Water came from you?”
“Sounds ridiculous, I know.”
“Okay. I’ll go get the towels.”
Joe went to go get towels from a bathroom that was connected to their room.
“Here’s one.”
“Thanks.”
They then started to clean up the mess.
Suddenly, they heard a spark, and Jane was pushed back from the water.
“What happened, Jane?”
“I – I don’t know. One moment, I was trying to soak up the water. The next moment, I felt electricity coming through me.”
“Wait, there’s no electrical cords coming through the puddle!”
“Weird. Do you think it came from you?”
“M –Maybe.”
They stared at each other.
“Do you think we can spray water and shock others deliberately without tools, Joe?”
“I don’t know.”
Just then, they heard their father scream.
“D-Did you hear that, Jane?”
“I did. What’s happening to him?”
“I don’t know. Let’s go see.”
“I have a feeling that something pretty bad is going on here.”
“Me too, but we can’t just help our father from here now, can we?”
“I guess so.”
They went to the kitchen where they see their father on the floor.
“Joe, is that, blood?”
They saw a shadowy figure towering over them.
They looked around and saw one behind them with a knife.
They barely dodged the stab of the knife and ran upstairs.
“Who are they?” asked Jane.
“I don’t know,” replied Joe. “But it seems they want to murder us!”
“Why can’t we call the police?” asked Jane.
“Because they’ll arrive too late.”
They ran into their room and slammed the door shut before locking it.
“Won’t they bomb the door down?” asked a panicked Jane.
“It’ll give us time to escape through this window.”
“Isn’t it too high, Joe?”
“We can use bed sheets.”
“Would there be enough bed sheets to make a rope? And how are we going to cut it?”
A slight pause.
“I don’t know.”
They then heard some screams.
“What happened, Joe?”
“I don’t know.”
The door then seemed to open by itself, and a shadowy figure appeared on the other side.
“Didn’t we lock the door, Joe?”
The shadowy figure chuckled.
“Lock picking is one of the most useful skills a ninja can have.”
Smoke enveloped the figure.
When it cleared, a friendly-looking Asian man stood where the shadowy figure was.
“I’m Yoshiro Sugimoto, Japanese ninja spirit.”
“You’re a ninja?” exclaimed Joe. “You don’t look like one.”
“True ninjas don’t make themselves obvious,” replied Yoshiro. “The Purple Karjam sent me here to fetch you two for Frogwings.”
“You mean the being from those urban legends?” asked Jane.
“Yes, Jane, he replied.”
“How come you know my name?” asked Jane.
“The Purple Karjam told me your names,” replied Yoshiro.
“Who is the Purple Karjam?” asked Joe.
“I’ll tell you in the bit,” replied Yoshiro “But let’s get going. Pack your stuff.”

Later, Yoshiro was waiting outside as Joe and Jane came out with their luggage.
“So,” said Joe. “Where’s the car?”
Yoshiro:  “We walk to the train station.”
“What?!?” exclaimed Joe and Jane.
“But this luggage is heavy!”
“Hmm,” went Yoshiro.
“Have you heard of the thing called ‘hammerspace’?”
“Sure,” said Joe. “It’s like a pocket dimension for your stuff. They don’t exist in real life, though.”
Just as he said this, Yoshiro picked up the luggage, which seemed to turn into glowing energy before disappearing completely.
“WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH OUR LUGGAGE?!?” exclaimed Joe and Jane.
“Hammerspace. Don’t be shocked. After all, if a Japanese spirit is standing right beside you, you should have known that anything’s possible.”
They calmed down.
“Let’s get walking”.

While they were walking to the station, Yoshiro started to explain,
“Once upon a time, there existed a powerful scientist who calls himself the Purple Karjam. His power came not only via his huge intellect, but also by the fact that he had the ability to mimic almost everything he knew the workings of.

With the base of operations in a dimension called ‘Karjam’s Domain’, PK scours the Grande Multiverse researching as many universes as possible as long as he lives.

In one such universe, he came across the world called “Draconia” of the Darii galaxy, ruled by the mighty king Tyranto.

What interested PK of this world is the fact is that not only is magic prevalent there, but also technology. The world developed technology sooner than the people of this world, and may have been a lot more advance if it wasn’t for the fact that research into technology had stalled.”

As he was researching everything about the world, he came upon a scroll detailing a prophecy stating that a great evil threatens the world every 1996 years.

With the last one occurring in 1939 A.D., PK realised that the next arrival is approaching soon, so he researched how to end the evil permanently.

As he was researching, he had a revelation: only those who bare the will of Jinjin can defeat the evil permanently.

He then managed to identify a few of those who had the will of Jinjin:
  • Me,
  • Himself (which amused him),
  • The fabled Dragon Rider Prince and Princess and their respective nobodies,
  • Two beings with mastery over the fifth element,
  • The Queen, Princess and Red Paladin of Justice Hearts and their respective nobodies,
  • The cursed Irovan,
  • The one of reckless Yu-Gi-Oh! duelling, and
  • You two.”
“Us?” wondered Joe and Jane.
“Yes, you two,” replied Yoshiro.
“At that time, you two were still babies living with your real parents. He knew them personally, and as soon as he realised this, he figured they may be in danger, so he raced to where they were staying in order to save them.

But it was too late: dark elf assassins of Il'andri'iel murdered them when they arrived home from work. When he went to check to see if you were alright, he saw the corpses of the assassins I had killed protecting you.

After thinking it over, I suggested he take you two to someone we already absolutely trust: Your step dad on Earth.”

“Wait, so we’re aliens, then?” ask Joe.
“And our step dad’s telling the truth about how our parents died?” asked Jane.

“Inhumans, to be precise,” Yoshiro replied.
“He wasn’t too keen on lying to you about how your parents actually died, so he decided a different tactic: telling the truth in a sarcastic way.

Anyway, he had done a very good job hiding you.

In fact, it was only today where Il'andri'iel discovered where you two were hiding and decided to finish what he had started.

As soon as I found out, I decided to get here as quick and possible to save you.”

“But then why did you look like one of those dark elves?” asked Jane.
“As a Japanese spirit, I can change my form at will.”
“If the Purple Karjam cared about us like that, wouldn’t he keep trying to check up on us?” asked Joe.
“He did,” he replied. “You know him better as ‘Uncle Richard’”.
Knew it, thought Joe and Jane.

When they arrived at the train station, Joe asked,
“So, where’s platform nine and three quarters?”
“We’re not going to Hogwarts, Joe,” Yoshiro replied. “We’re going to Frogwings.”
“So, what platform we’re going on?”
“We’re going on platform 3.1415.”
“We’re going on platform pi.”
“Yes.”
