[1] What's the difference between a Dark Elf and a Night Elf? (Il'andri'iel is a Dark Elf, yet apparently there's a Night Elf named Ondorus appearing in Episode 7?)
Dark Elves, in the universe of Dragon Riders, are elves who control the element of Darkness, or are born from such a being.
Il'andri'iel, for example, was born a Dark Elf, because his parents were both Dark Elves. However, Il'andri'iel's maternal grandfather was a normal elf, who controlled the element of Darkness. When he and Il'andri'iel's maternal grandmother got married, however, it resulted in him becoming corrupted, turning him into a pure Dark Elf. They're weak to Light but resist Darkness.

Night Elves, on the other hand, are elves who hate daylight, and prefers the night. Much like vampires do, but for entirely different reasons.
Night Elves have sensitive skins, but are more adept at doing assassinations and such. They are also immune to both Light and Darkness, however, and have pale skins (usually a light purple color).

Then there are the Blood Elves. They control the element of Blood, but are weak to Poison. They prefer day to night, so think of them as the opposite of Night Elves.
Blood Elves are also extremely violent, however, which earned them the name of "Blood Elves".

[2] Aren't Xeshan and Ximk going to be central to the plot of the Seretou Alliance? (I think you said something along those lines somewhere...)
Yep. I'm not saying anything though :P
The chapters in Episode 1 where Xeshan and Ximk appear in, are all prior to 2013, in the year 2012. Xeshan and Ximk went to the same school as Serena, Ashley and Kori, on Seretou.
However, they just went missing one day, when Serena's parents were murdered and her therapist killed. No-one knows who killed those three... except for me, as I'm the one writing everything. :P

[3] What's Shaun's tragic past?
Death.
Lots and lots of death.
Saying that "almost everyone in Shaun's life died" and taking that up to eleven eleven times is an understatement.
And that's just in a single year, when Shaun was 7.
Imagine him having to go through so much death for three years.

(And most of those are people who don't come from South Africa... such as illegal immigrants, or aliens from other planets...)
