Figured we should give this a try.
Basically, the left side and right side don't exist.
For example:
BLACK
A B C D E F G H
8 . N B . K B N R 8
7 P P P P P P P P 7
6 . . . . . . . . 6
5 . . . . . . . . 5
4 . . Q B B Q . . 4
3 . . . . . . . . 3
2 P P P P P P P P 2
1 . N B . K B N R 1
A B C D E F G H
WHITE
In normal chess, the Queen can't capture the other one.
In this variant, though...
BLACK
A B C D E F G H
8 . N B . K B N R 8
7 P P P P P P P P 7
6 . . . . . . . . 6
5 . . . . . . . . 5
4 < < Q B B Q < < 4
3 . . . . . . . . 3
2 P P P P P P P P 2
1 . N B . K B N R 1
A B C D E F G H
WHITE
The borders don't exist on the left or right side.
If the north and south sides were gone, it'd be checkmate at the start of the game :))
This test game is to see whether it will work.
In most chess games, one person plays against another.
However, for this test, I'll let all members control Black.
For example, Dr. Egregious can control Black's movement in the first turn, Shane can control the second turn of Black, Kushagra controls Black's third turn, and so on.
Also, if Dr. Egregious and KarjamP both post their move before the movement is made, Dr. Egregious' move is made and KarjamP's cancelled.
If Shane and Dr. Time both post their move before the movement is made, Shane's move is made and Dr. Time's move is cancelled.
Something like that.
First one to post has that movement made, in simple terms (I hope).

[offtopic]
Sandwich posting? ???
What is that, if I may ask?
[/offtopic]
-
It's a slang term:
My post
Someone else's post
My post
That's sandwich posting. It's not a problem in most threads like the one for your game versus Karjam--since that should mostly be you two alternating--but in cases like this one where several of us are sharing the black pieces, I felt it'd be selfish of me to hog all of the black moves. :D
-
Ah.
Thanks for the clarification. :)
-
I don't mind off-topicness in this thread :)
Sandwiches aren't to be confused with sand witches.
Sand witches are scary.

You might want to take that back; I've been playing off of the record rather than the board, and I just noticed that they don't match: your bishop on c4 should be on b5.
-
Oh, didn't notice! :-[
Thanks, it's been fixed.

It happens; I just castled incorrectly in my game with Shane. XD
Still want to play Ng5?

Thanks, Shane. :) Good teamwork!
Also, it occurred to me a bit ago: what we're basically playing is cylindrical chess, if you think about it. Cool!

Maybe you two ought to be on a team in a match of Four-Handed Chess? :))

You didn't fall for the sacrifice play; nicely done, Xylorta. :)
-
I almost did, but my younger sister warned me about it.
I was rather angry at her; I said I didn't need her help.
... Guess I'm more irritable these days. :'(
Now I probably ought to apologize, right?
Maybe with the power of Pikachu.
She just loves Pikachu.
But enough sorrow.

... So... both me and Taylor... have apologizing to do? :-[
Pawn to, ah, A6.
Mr. Shane, you can, uh, update the board. Or Mr. Dr. Egregious, or maybe Mr. KarjamP, or Mr. Solid Snake or Mr. Wayne...?

Something is amiss. Our black-square bishop was taken (14. Bxd2), and not only would 20. ... Be3 place a bishop on a black square, there actually isn't a bishop on e3; it's on e5. Tomorrow I'll get a board out and see if I can make heads or tails of this.
-
Until, ah, this contradiction is fixed, I can not, ah, do a thing then...
I'll wait.
Or, ah, S-Shane could use that board analysis thing...?
-
(http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20080914234933/aceattorney/images/thumb/5/5c/Gotcha.gif/180px-Gotcha.gif)
(Sorry, had to do that :P )
Using this analysis board editor (http://www.chess.com/analysis-board-editor) that Dr. Egregious posted the link to a while back (and making sure that legal moves aren't enforced since this is Cylindrical Chess), I've been able to figure out what happened.
This post (http://shanescavestory.createaforum.com/chess/portal-chess-test/msg9122/#msg9122) has the contradiction.
Black lost a bishop when it took the Rook on H1, yet it somehow gained one a turn or so after Rook A1 moved to H1.
In addition, the bishops were on the wrong squares (C4 and D4 instead of B5 and C5).
That is all I'll say for now.
-
Oh crap! I'm sorry about that! Such an embarrassing mistake :-[
Does this mean we have to start all over again? D:
-
No worries. :) These ASCII boards really aren't that readable; mistakes are going to happen from time to time. As to what we should do about it: I could agree to a do-over, since the mistake was in our favor. Alternatively, we could remove that bishop from the board and keep playing from here.
-
I agree with the do-over as well, though I think we should play the same moves we played before the mistake came in.
-
Yes, excellent point.
-
Quick Reply has a "preview" button next to "post", I just keep previewing the chess board first and double-check it with something like Chess Titans, or, as of now, that analysis chess board.
Also, when did you avoid the quadruple-2 post count, Shane?
So, do we start over in a new thread, or is that decision in Tayl's hands?
-
Figured we should give this a try.
Basically, the left side and right side don't exist.
For example:
In normal chess, the Queen can't capture the other one.
In this variant, though...
Excuse me, and please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but every time I've played chess the queen can ALWAYS take the other queen(s)
-
That's something else, I'd think.
-
Thanks if the near and far edges wrap around; what we're doing is having the left and right edges wrap around.
Also, in the first case, the kings would be adjacent. Technically, White would lose before anybody made a move.

A zero-turn victory, huh? :P
Knights and Bishops on the right side of the board, Queens, and Kings combined causing a checkmate, something like that, right?
...
It'd actually be funny if Kings could cause checkmate (which is possible in the RPG chess at these forums since one's character can be female or male; female characters basically are Queens that work like Kings while their Kings work like Queens). :))
So, shall we go back in turns? :)
Also, Black appears to be mostly Shane and Dr. Egregious, so going by their first elements (Ice and Darkness, respectively), and the color of their pieces, I shall dub them "Team Frozen Darkness". :))
Dianke posted in this thread, so I'll let her control White's pieces if she wants to. "Team Toxic Light" is the name of White. :P

Uhh, you can't move your bishop to A6..?

Am I correct, Dr. Egregious?

At least I don't have to fear that Tayl will be angry at me for losing, haha.
Good game.

Thank you, Wayne. :)
