Compromising with the ability to moderate users.
« on: November 20, 2013, 10:45:17 am »
Those abilities sure are useful for moderation purposes.

Yes, even the abilities that you don't want us to have but is included with the bundle for the "moderation of users" privilege.

It'll be more difficult to moderate problematic users if we can't (like, if we can't see the user's IP, how could we use the IP ban feature?)

Therefore, I propose we discuss a compromise with those features, like giving us moderators separate rules to follow as well.

Thing is, what if an user uses a proxy server, like TED did?
I'm guessing he and Shane had the same IP, and if TED was IP banned, wouldn't Shane be IP-banned as well?

(I did my best to do research.)

Ah, nostalgia. It has been weeks since I last came here... and now that I'm back, I'll just poke around here.

Poke.

Oh boy... :))

Anyway, Charlotte's right.

TED used a proxy server, and if he was IP banned, I'd also fall under the IP ban. :-\
Not to mention that IP bans are easy to evade, as far as I've heard from Taylor.
Just in case an IP ban would cause another member problems, IP bans are, thus, banned.
If, say, a spambot came and posted random gibberish, and it was IP banned, and the IP range was close to Dr. Time's, he might be affected by the IP ban unintentionally.

Just because it's "easy to evade" doesn't mean it won't stop people who are less tech savvy from evading.

And besides, only the most persistent ban evaders would try to do so, and the only one we know of is TED.

Even so, we should still be prepared for other rule breakers that aren't TED, as IP banning would stop the person from signing up multiple times if they don't have any equipment or access to another computer ("proxies" count as equipment), which the former would only work if they aren't savvy enough with internet technology.

In the end, IP banning would tell them we REALLY don't want their kind, and thus, if they want to be persistent, they'd try to get around the IP banning.

I think you'd have to give back to the mods the ability to moderate other people if you want us to be able to give warnings to troublesome users as well as ban them when they continue to disobey (or they're breaking a very severe rule like being a spambot).

Anyway, I thought moderators could access the Ban List. That's what the Admin CP options for you moderators say: "can access ban list".
(Something like that.)

Taylor's the other admin, I'll wait for her opinion first before she smites me into oblivion with that which I fear a lot. D:

But what about our ability to give warning points?

Fatih needs 10 because he used a political meme.

Wayne already gave Fatih 5 warning points a few days ago. :o
I've added 10 more, as you wanted to add.

Anyway, it shows that you haven't seen this post, Richard.
Global moderators can warn other members regardless.
